3rd Quarter Newsletter
Summertime is here again! We are wishing we could all be together enjoying this awesome weather we are having in our beautiful beach community. After many hurdles in 2019, our team was ready to jump start a fresh new year. Then the pandemic hit unexpectedly. To say the least, the first and second quarter of 2020 has been challenging. The virus has given rise to a whole new way of approaching life, and COA’s programs are no exception. Nevertheless, the COA team is committed to keeping the faith and delivering healthy activities to our community. All of our outreach programs have had to modify, change format, and find a successful way to continue. The Food Connection has been committed to providing the much needed services for those less fortunate by learning all the necessary Government Health requirements and following their guidelines to make sure we are providing for everyone’s safety. The COA Clubs and the COA Music Outreach programs have all been reformatted and are using the online services thru ZOOM Meeting. Besides the current programs mentioned above, we have a new program called THRIVE ALIVE DISCOVERY that has been developed. This program will focus on the 18 to 30 years of age who are starting into adulthood and need direction, while they are staying sober. We look forward to launching this program as soon as the environment allows. We would like to take this time to give a hand to all our VOLUNTEERS who give so graciously of their time and energy to bring our programs to the community! COA is indebted to you and we could not do this without you. To all out there who share our vision and would like to join our efforts, please contact us on our website. It is our hope that soon we will be able to meet in person again to keep the relationships growing that have bonded us in the past. We also look forward to building new relationships with other community organizations that support our vision of healthy youth development.
With Gratitude and Heart-felt Thanks,
Steve Bartock,
President, COA Board
NEWEST COA BOARD MEMBER IN CHARGE OF SPONSORSHIPS AND TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE
JONATHAN GERBER
Jonathan is an SCHS alumni and former varsity football player who helped start Gamerz 4 the Cure, and is a big believer in the positive effects a strong community can have. Over the past six years he has worked with COA to run gaming activities, form connections within the Esports industry, and generally lend a helping hand. Among other things, he has a passion for technology and games: working as an Engineer, and playing in his free time.
As a member of the board, he plans to use his technical skills to help with the digital aspects of COA, including website donations, sponsorships, and shout-outs for those who so graciously give to the cause.

COA BIKE CLUB
“BIKE WITH MIKE”
Summertime is here and the COA Cycling Club is in full swing. We’re excited to be back riding our bikes outside enjoying some fresh air and fun. What is the COA Cycling Club? It’s a free youth program to get kids (junior/high school) on to mountain bikes with our mentor Mike Russell to learn the benefits of a healthy outdoor activity. We welcome all levels of riders, although our core goal is focused on beginner/intermediate development so don’t worry if you’ve never ridden before; we are here to help teach, guide, and support you on the trails. The program runs every Wednesday (during Daylight savings) at 5pm, typically meeting in San Clemente at a designated trailhead where we will go over quick instructions, introductions, and then set out for a 1.5 hour ride. Your kids will learn not bike skills plus leadership and teamwork while having a fun time outside. Don’t have a bike? No problem. Contact us and fill out a waiverso we can arrange a bike to use for the day. Parents are encouraged to ride with us, if possible, to assist with group cohesion.Lastly, the fundraiser that started and funded the COA cycling program (Hardman Classic) will be coming up October 11th, 2020. It’s a grassroots event for experienced cyclists that are out to raise money for the kids. We’d love to have parent volunteers, and the kids there to cheer on riders, along with experiencing the positive cycling community in Southern California. There will also be a Kid’s event that weekend for the COA Cycling Club to tackle and be part of the festivities. Learn more athttp://www.hardmanraceseries.com See you on the trails.– Mike
DOUBLE HOOK UP AT CALAFIA – JUNE 2020
Covid-19 will be here for the remainder of the summer, but we’re eager to catch something else… Fish! That right, the COA Fishing Program is back on for the remainder of the 2020 summer with the first of three fishing events taking place at Calafia State Beach on July 22, 2020 from 9am-Noon.
Our fishing pro mentor, Chad Schiel has fished the beach three times this year since it’s reopening to the public and reports that it’s fishing even better than last season!
He anticipates this will be the case for the remainder of the summer. Corbina, Croaker, Sting Rays and a variety of small sharks are common fare on our outings which average three fish per attendee. Bigger fish, and Leopard sharks pushing four feet long are common place in late hot months of summer.
COA Fishing dates currently booked are 7/22, 8/15, and 9/5 at Calafia State Beach from 9am – Noon. If the beaches close as a result of Covid-19, for obvious reasons we will have to postpone or cancel.

“Community Outreach Alliance (COA) is one of the greatest community partners I have ever worked with. If I could describe this organization in three words, it would be: initiation, innovation, and passion. The leadership and team culture in COA is impeccable and solution-seeking is one of their greatest areas of strength. This is an organization that looks at a roadblock and sees an opportunity- if there is a troubled youth, COA sees a bright future. COA’s foundations are built upon gratitude and service and is fueled by hope to build up youth leaders for our future. I cannot commend this organization enough.”
– Teresa Tran, Waymakers’ Health Educator Dear Community Outreach Alliance:On the behalf of Waymakers and the South County Collective Impact, we would like to thank the staff of Community Outreach Alliance for their time, talent, and hard work. Your team has dedicated themselves to ensure the success of the Community Outreach Alliance:
Project Pandemic Override (COA PPO). The unusual circumstances of COVID-19 revealed an urgent need to quickly adapt community resources onto a safe, virtual platform. Thanks to your staff’s input, ideas, and most importantly, their enthusiasm, the South County Collective Impact was able to launch the Youth Lead Instructor’s Alternative Activities Project and the Prevention Speaker Series within a week of the stay-at-home order in March 2020. These two projects provided an environment where youth could explore healthy activities and hobbies, be educated on substance use prevention, and learn healthy coping skills to improve their mental health during this pandemic. We look forward to our continued partnership with COA to serve our community and are looking forward to scheduling future meetings to develop new project opportunities to help empower youth to become leader advocates to a healthier life.Sincerely,
Waymakers
